THE NAME AND FAMILY OF MULFORD.

[Extract from The Roots Research Bureau]
[Manuscript Number: 1897]

The name of MULFORD is believed to have been derived from the residence of its first bearers at a place, so called, in England, but the exact location of this spot is not in evidence. It is probable that the name is of common origin with the English surname MILFORD, meaning “the ford at the mill”. In ancient English and early American records the name is found in the various forms of Mullford, Muleford, Mollford, Molford, Mulford, and others, of which the last is the spelling most frequently found in America in modern times.
Anciently seated in Wiltshire and Devonshire, England, the families bearing the name belonged, for the most part, to the landed gentry and yeomanry of Great Britain.
The earliest definite records of the name in England are those of Gilbert de Mullford, who was living in Wiltshire during the reigns of King Henry III and King Edward I [circa 1216-1307]; and those of Edmund and Richard de Muleford, who were living in Wiltshire about the year 1273. These records are, however, only fragmentary.
Of the Devonshire family of the name [generally recorded as MOLFORD], one Roger Molfford was living at South Molton, in that county, toward the end of the fifteenth century. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Gilbert Hache, and had a son, Thomas Molfford, who left issue by his wife, Agnes Blackmore, of a son named William. This William was the father by his wife, Sabyn Shote, of Jane, William, Edyth and Agnes, of whom the son married Alice, daughter of Thomas White, of South Molton, and had issue by her of at least one son, Roger Molford. this Roger died about 1594, leaving issue by his wife Amye, daughter of William Copener, alias Cadburye, of seven children, Roger, Thomas, John, William, Sabian, Mary, and Agnes, of whom the first son died without issue.
Thomas Molford, second son of Roger and Amye, resided at Chulmleigh, in Devon. By his wife Suzan, daughter of Thomas Southcot, he was the father of Roger, John, Thomas, Gilbert, Amy, Suzan, Barbara, and Thomazin.
John Molford, third son of Roger and Amye died about 1626 at South Molton in Devonshire, leaving issue by his wife, Cecilie Maye, whom he married in 1593, of Roger, John, Amye, Elizabeth, Suzan, Mary, and Dorothie. Of these, Roger Molford was a student in the Middle Temple, London, and was married in 1631 to Zenobia Chollocomb, by whom he was the father of John Molford, who married Ursula Hele, of county Cornwall, and had issue by her of John, Elizabeth, Mary, Ursula and Francis; and John, the younger son of John and Cecilie, left only one child, a daughter named Cecil or Cecilie.
William Molford, fourth son of Roger and Amye, married Grace Calmady and was the father by her of at least two children, Roger and Ann or Amy, of whom the son is thought to have died without male issue.
Of the family in London, further record has been found of William Mulford, whose wife, Elizabeth was buried there in 1655; and of Judith Mulford, who was married there in 1675 to one Thomas Grice.
No definite connection between the above mentioned lines and the first of the family to settle in America is now in evidence, although one historian says of the brothers, John and William Mulford, who were the earliest emigrants to this country, that they were “probably from Devonshire, England, where the name is often spelled “Molford.
